19 July,2017 Group 8 Winsome Liu Michelle Cheung Jade Ngan Sharon She Sherry She Today, we had a field trip to iFly. Each of us could fly inside the tunnel for one minute and we got to have a once-in-a-lifetime flying experience. We think this is a very fun yet educational outing and we were really glad that we had the opportunity to learn about the working principles of the tunnel. From this field trip, we learnt how to listen to instructions carefully and to stay calm when we are in an extreme environment. We thought this is a very useful learning experience and we were very thankful for having this activity. After dinner, we had fire pit night and we could make traditional American snacks, smores and to enjoy the stunning sunset in Lake Lagunita. We took lots of beautiful pictures and we thoroughly enjoyed being surrounded by the breath-taking scenery and the amazing nature. We really had a lot of fun today and the memories we had today will definitely last forever. ...

19 July 2017 Group 3 Kelly Wong Cherine Chan Serene Lam Candy Lo Anna Tsoi In the morning , we went to iFly , which is an indoor diving centre. We took 45 minutes to go there. We first had a lesson about the theory on how to fly and the structure of the wind tunnel. Most of us thought that the fan is below us , but actually it is above us , we were so amazed. After waited for a long time , it's finally out turn to fly! We lined outside the wind tunnel , and took turns to go in it with the guidance of the instructor. We all flew very successfully , some of us even could fly by ourselves without the help of the instructor. We all had a memorable experience and enjoyed a lot.   After flying , we went a famous California fast food shop called In-N-Out , we had burgers , French fries and milkshake there. It's the first time for us to eat in a fast food shop in US. They're so different from the ones in Hong Kong.  After lunch, we went ...

19th July Melanie Ip Greta Lam Janet Lee Christine Lum Dorothy Ma  Then we had a firepit night. We made s'mores ourselves, we sat by the fire together and roasted marshmallow.  We took lots of photo together and had a great time. We climbed trees and it was a great experience for us as we sledom climb trees in Hong Kong. During the sunset, we took pretty photos. These precious photos help preserve our memories and we will remember this day forever. This morning after breakfast we went to ifly, where we had a minute to experience flying in an air tunnel. We had a class on  the theory behind the air tunnel and learnt about how it worked. As a large group we also had an experiment on how different objects with different masses and surface areas need different wind speeds to fly. It was also rather nerve wracking to try flying but we all had a great time. We were helped by the instuctor and most of us succeeded in flying on our own. Sadly it only lasted o...

19/7/2017 Group 1 Bernice Leung Annie Suen Pamela Tang Beata Wong Vanessa Yu We went to Ifly and learnt how to fly in a giant tunnel filled with strong air in the morning. We were first taught by an Ifly instructor of the relationship between mass, density and speed by the use of different kinds of balls. Afterwards, we were allowed into the VIP room and learnt about how the giant air tunnel operates. We also knew about velosity which will be useful in our studies in the future years. All of us were quite nervous before the flight as we are the first group to fly. However after we have started flying, we enjoyed the process a lot. Being able to fly freely is always one of the dreams of many children and we are finally able to do so! In the afternoon, we attended a talk on Stanford University admissions. The speaker told us about his own experiences and lots of information on university applications. These tips benefit us greatly, giving us a glimp...

All of us from 1047 and French House got the opportunity to get into the air chamber and experience indoor skydiving for one minute. At first, many of us were very nervous, as it felt as if we were in an area that defies gravity, which was quite scary and it was the first time for many of us. As the instructors gave us a briefing on the flying positions and what to be careful of, we were all pumped and excited for the experience. All of us had a lot of fun in the chamber, it was not scary but certainly an enjoyable time. Out of the chamber, we got to see many of our classmates and even Mrs. Haider experience indoor skydiving! The lecture about admission to Stanford was also meaningful and inspiring. It gave us hope and confidence to get into better universities when we grow up. Thanks to the lecturer who told us abou...

18/7/2017  Group 1 Bernice Leung Annie Suen Pamela Tang Beata Wong Vanessa Yu For today's morning, our cohort had 'persuasive communication' in which we were taught the skills to communicate with others in a convincing way. We love the way the teacher started off the lesson by asking us to brainstorm ideas on how a persuasive speech is like, and it was a good way to learn by watching examples from TED Talks so as to have a general opinion of the differences between a good and a bad speech. This had been a meaningful lesson and the knowledge we gained on how to deliver a persuasive speech and communicate convincingly can often be applied in our daily lives. We also tried to use the skills we learnt to deliver a speech to a particular audience in each of the scenarios given, and we realised how important persuasive communication is as it helps expressing our ideas effectively. Today afternoon, we had an engineering lesson.  We learned engineering by doing different e...

18 July 2017 Group 3 Kelly Wong Cherine Chan Serene Lam Candy Lo Anna Tsoi In the morning, we had persuasive writing lesson. We have learnt about ethos, pathos and logos. They are credibility, emotions, and evidence in Greek. We had managed ways to present our ideas better and be more persuasive when writing and speaking by using the three skills. Beside, we have also learnt that we need to understand our audience before persuading when in order to achieve a better effect. Then, we analysed a letter written to the editor and an advertisement found in a magazine. We identified the ethos, pathos, and logos there and commented on the passage and the advertisement's persuasiveness. After the lesson, we had more confidence in our writing and improved especially in persuasive writing.   In the afternoon, we attended Mathematical Logistics class. Although we were not particularly good at Mathematics, the teacher was still really patient with us and we had a fun time learning. W...

July18th Group 4 Melanie Ip Greta Lam Janet Lee Christine Lum Dorothy Ma In the morning we had a lesson about rhetoric. It teaches us how to effectively persuade others. Our teacher used persuading our parents to buy a pet puppy. We listed out reasons why we should buy a puppy, how a puppy brings benefits and many more. We can also use threats to persuade although it may not be useful at all times. Then we analysed news and advertisements. We used ethos, pathos and logos to analyse the sources and decided whether they are persuasive or not. Near the end of the lesson, we wrote down a question, a firm point we remember, and three useful points that we plan to use in our daily lives. The lesson was really helpful and I hope after I learning these skills, I can improve in my essays at school. The second class that we had was mathematical logic and problem solving. Since most of our cohort had little interest in math, we decided to talk about problem solving. The to...

17/7 Group 5 Victoria Ip Kathy Lau Tivona Yeung Joanna Keung Jacqueline Lo As we are into the second week of the program, we started to take classes at the Stanford campus once again. Our first lesson was cracking codes. In the very beginning, we were given a task to crack codes of boxes with several clues and red herrings. It was confusing at first, but the task taught us about the importance of collaboration and that working together does make the whole progress much more efficient. In the lesson, we were also taught about different methods of encrypting messages, cracking them and how cracking codes evolved throughout the years. The next session was Engineering. It was out of our expectation the content was about optical phenomena. It turned out to be the most interesting lesson for us. Instead of lectures, the teacher chose another method for us to learn which was by doing experiments with gummy bears and M&Ms. We also learned about holograms. We found holograms fun a...
